Tassie rewards the adventurous and an escorted multi-day or self-drive itinerary deep into the heart of this natural wonderland is just the ticket. Experience the nature and wildlife, wine and produce, hikes, waterfalls, charming towns, history and isolation on five days of adventure, access and local insight. This is the definitive Tasmanian Epic.
Suggested but highly flexible itinerary:
DAY ONE
Whether you’ve chosen a self-drive or escorted adventure, you will be met at your hotel by your expert Localing host for a 9 am start. On escorted tours, the short drive across the Derwent provides a little time to get to know your host and to share with them a few interests to help personalise your experience.
For self-drivers, your premium rental vehicle and GPS will be delivered to your hotel together with your detailed and personalised itinerary. While not physically with you, your host is available throughout your adventure to offer support and suggestions to help you get the most from your experience.
Take in the charming surrounds of historic Richmond, the perfect place for morning tea and scones. The region has a number of excellent wineries and distilleries where optional tastings and tours are available.
Continue up to the stunning east coast of Tasmania, known for endless white-sand beaches, exceptional oysters, restaurants, walking trails and more wine and regional produce.
Choose from a delicious cafe style lunch nestled among rolling hills and sprawling vineyards or some farm-to-plate dining at an iconic local vineyard.
Arrive into Freycinet early to leave the afternoon spare for a hike up the mountain for some breathtaking sunset views across Coles Bay.
Spend the night in one of the regions beautiful accommodation options (Freycinet or Swansea). Your host will be available to help with dinner arrangements if required.
DAY TWO
Wake up early for a beach walk, arrange a pre-breakfast surf lesson, ATV experience or do some climbing and abseiling at the incredible ‘White Water Wall’.
Continue up the east coast towards Mt. William and the Bay of Fires. The coastal drive is stunning all the way along with plenty of local breweries and regional restaurants to stop for a delicious local lunch.
Finish the day’s adventure in Tassie’s second city, Launceston, where Victorian-era buildings and broad, ornate boulevards lend a unique charm.
Spend the night in one of the city’s fine hotels. Your host will be available to help with dinner arrangements if required.
DAY THREE
Start the day with breakfast and a relaxing, guided walk around old Launceston. Hear a few historic tales about the city, meet some local characters and discover a couple of hidden gems.
Depart for Cradle Mountain mid-morning, skirting mountains and quiet regional towns, stopping for a casual lunch in one of the regions wonderful cafes, bakeries or provedores.
Check into your accommodation in Cradle Mountain in the early afternoon with plenty of time to enjoy one of the national park’s incredible short walks or hikes.
Return to your accommodation for an on-site dinner and quiet evening playing board games, chatting with other travellers or reading by the fire.
DAY FOUR
Start the day right with an early breakfast. If you’re keen on a high-adrenaline option, a guided canyoning experience is an excellent alternative to the regions beautiful hiking trails.
However you explore it, the nature and wilderness of this world-famous national park are spectacularly beautiful and teeming with wildlife. A picnic lunch is normally best out here.
Head off in the afternoon for the short and stunning drive south-west to Strahan for your final evening of the adventure.
Spend the night in accommodation near Strahan. Your host will be available to help with dinner arrangements if required.
DAY FIVE
Start the morning with a walk around the historic town of Strahan on the banks of the beautiful Franklin River. The region has some lovely trails to explore but the best way to spend your morning is on one of the incredible river cruises deep into this spectacular wilderness.
White water rafting is possible from nearby Queenstown if you’re keen on a high-adrenaline alternative and the transport back from the river via historic steam-train is a real treat.
Cross the state from west to east along a wilderness road as you take the long journey back to Hobart. For a quicker option, fly the route by light plane (scheduled flights on Mon/Wed/Fri).
Return to Hobart by 7 pm (start and finish times can be varied to suit your needs).
