This amazing, historically significant region is a stone’s throw from Hobart with plenty of hidden treasures to surprise and delight. Experience one of Tasmania’s most spectacular coastal walks. Choose to get up close to Tassie Devils and other native wildlife or sample farm-fresh wine and produce and hear plenty of fascinating tales from your Localing host at the Port Arthur Historic Site.
Suggested but highly flexible itinerary:
Be picked up from your hotel or the ferry terminal at 9 am by your expert Localing host in a luxury vehicle with bottled water, local treats and in-car wi-fi. If you’d prefer to arrive in style, choose to journey via private helicopter straight down to Port Arthur.
Cross the river Derwent and journey along the stunning Tasman Highway through charming countryside, past lagoons and estuaries, islands and mountains.
Stop at Eaglehawk Neck for fresh coffee and pastries with a breathtaking view across The Neck, past Devil’s Kitchen all the way to Cape Pillar – dramatic coastal cliffs and jagged rock formations.
Visit various sites on a short walk along the coast including the Tessellated Pavements and Waterfall Bay. For those keen on an exceptional hiking experience, Cape Raoul is one of Tasmania’s great short walks and is challenging and extremely beautiful.
Enjoy a charming local lunch of fresh Tasmanian produce at the lavender farm overlooking the Southern Ocean, or opt for a more casual picnic or café option.
The Port Arthur Historic Site is something of a ‘must-see’ when visiting Tasmania. It’s the world’s largest and most significant convict site and the perfect place to learn about this strange and important period of colonial history. There are scheduled group tours and a boat experience on the site but for next-level insight, opt for a private guide (additional cost).
This region has plenty more to offer. On the day, your host will provide options for visiting a local wildlife park with dozens of Tassie devils. You might prefer to visit a local winery and oyster farm to sample local produce or even take an extended boat or helicopter tour to see the beautiful Tasman Peninsula from a different angle (additional costs).
Arrive back to your accommodation by 6 pm.
