Explore one of Australia’s most pristine natural wilderness areas on a full day in this local’s favourite national park. Wander miles of virgin coastline and feel the white sand beaches ‘squeak’ between your toes. Get lost in native rainforests teeming with wildlife and cast your eyes across the great Southern Ocean from Mt Oberon. This is not yet at the top of every visitor’s list – but it should be.
Suggested but highly flexible itinerary:
Be picked up in Melbourne at 7 am by your expert Localing host in a luxury vehicle with bottled water, local treats and in-car wi-fi. Spend the morning’s drive getting acquainted with your host and the various options for making the most of your day in Wilson’s Promontory National Park.
Stop for morning tea on the journey by Western Port Bay to take in the stunning views ad delicious regional fare.
We pass through the vibrant town of Fish Creek on our way into the Prom. and it’s a great place to meet a few locals and grab some local treats to enjoy on our day’s adventure.
Wilson’s Promontory is the southernmost point of mainland Australia and one of its most spectacular national park. Still something of a local’s secret, the park is teeming with native wildlife, picturesque sand dunes, squeaky white sand beaches, mountains, rainforests and coastal trails. Naturally, there’s just too much of it to see in a single day but your expert Localing host will help you navigate the options to best suit your interests, fitness and the conditions on the day.
The Mt. Oberon Summit Walk is a regular feature and we can basically guarantee plenty of native wildlife on the Wildlife Trail. Keep an eye out for kangaroos, emus, wombats and echidnas throughout the day – the Prom. won’t disappoint.
This is also paradise for bird lovers, with egrets, plovers and oystercatchers, herons, lapwings and even little penguins all common.
A visit to the impossibly white quartz sand of Squeaky Beach is a must and the coastal trails from here are a wonderful inclusion with varying lengths and options to suit your fitness.
Enjoy healthy snacks and a delicious picnic lunch in the wilderness with a freshly brewed pot of billy tea to finish up – an Australian classic!
An exciting new addition to the area is a 2.5 hours cruise by custom-built amphibious boat – an excellent optional inclusion for the day. Witness iconic South Point and cruise into the waters of the Bass Strait and Victoria’s first marine national park.
Discover a rugged and raw coast like no other as you explore The Glennies, Anderson Islets and Anser Island and marvel at the prehistoric boulders of Mount Oberon from the sea.
Begin your return journey back to Melbourne around 4 pm. After a full day of exploring this pristine wilderness, this three-hour road journey is a perfect chance to reflect on your experience and swap stories with your friendly host.
For an easier and more spectacular return journey, flights by helicopter and fixed-wing plane are available by arrangement.
