South Australia is the nation’s quiet achiever but for wine lovers the world over, it’s a state that needs no introduction. Name’s like Penfolds, Henschke and Torbreck can be found on every serious list of exceptional Australian wine but this is just the starting point. And it’s not just some of the world’s best Shiraz, you can expect to be delighted by an impressive range of exceptional varietals including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and some wonderful Pinots and Cabernets.

Enjoy tutored wine tastings and back vintages, meet winemakers and go behind the cellar doors. Take advantage of every meal with our favourite vineyard dining in each region and tastings of exceptional farm-gate produce throughout. Best of all, leave all the arrangements, driving and storytelling to us, and because you’re Localing and not touring you can still expect all the freedom and flexibility of going it alone, changing your plans on a whim, sleeping in or taking the afternoon to yourself.

DAY ONE

Meet your charming, knowledgable Localing host at Adelaide airport. Let us know if you need help arranging safe and affordable charter flights from any major Australian cities. We suggest arriving as early as possible in the day so there’s adequate time to dedicate to each of these distinctive wine regions.

The airport is just a stone’s throw from the Adelaide Hills so it’s a great home base from which to explore. Start with a wonderful lunch at one of our favourites like the Mt. Bera cellar door. Choose to take your time and savour the wine and views or squeeze in a few other stops before settling in for the evening. Your Localing host will help you choose the best wineries to suit your tastes and be sure to feature both the highlights and a few hidden treasures.

Mt. Lofty House is a gorgeous boutique hotel in the heart of the Adelaide Hills and just 15-minutes from the city. It’s an hour south of the Barossa and 45 minutes north of the McLaren Vale making it a perfect option. Both the Barossa and Mclaren Vale have some wonderful guest houses like The Louise, another of our favourites – we’re always happy to help you find the perfect option to suit.

Hardy’s Verandah Restaurant at Mt. Lofty is a must if staying on-site as their degustation is among the best meals you can have in South Australia.

DAY TWO

Meet your host after breakfast for a charming, hour’s drive north to the Barossa Valley through quaint heritage towns and native bushland. It’s a great time to discuss a few of the day’s options which regularly include some farm-gate produce, a light bushwalk and plenty of excellent wine, most notably of course – the big Barossa reds.

The food scene in the Barossa is absurdly good but it’s hard to go past Hentley Farm for lunch where the focus is always on fresh, seasonal and local and the wines are of course exceptional.

For dessert, taste fortified port from your birth year at an institution endorsed by the Royal Family, experience a few Australian botanicals at a state-of-the-art gin distillery or taste cow and sheep cheeses at an excellent local dairy.

Head back to your accommodation to freshen up before dinner.

This evening, make the short trip into Adelaide for a tailored nightlife experience with your host to ‘Wine, Dine & Discover Adelaide’. Visit urban wine cellars and hidden laneway bars, chat with staff and owners about the city’s dynamic, emerging night culture while eating and drinking some of Adelaide’s finest. Soak up the culture of North Terrace, hear a few fascinating local tales and get to know the city through the eyes of a passionate local.

If you’re looking for an alternative, a degustation dining experience at Orana is not as fun as spending the evening with us but it’s really very good.

DAY THREE

Stunning coastline and rolling hills, the McLaren Vale a region perfect for fine wine and nature lovers with plenty of good food, art and scenery to match. With charming leafy streets, vine strung hills and quaint country homesteads, it’s a stunning touring region. When it comes to wine, Shiraz takes centre stage here, but the Cabernet’s are also wonderful.

Start the day with a few tutored tastings including experimental varietals and award-winning staples at a few of our favourite wineries, hand selected to suit your tastes.

The Salopian Inn is a Localing favourite for lunch but just one of a handful of exceptionally good restaurants in the region that range from casual to elegant depending on your mood.

Walk off lunch with a peaceful stroll downstream through Onkaparinga Gorge keeping an eye out for curious local wildlife.

Choose from a number of excellent options this afternoon, like the multisensory contemporary art and winemaking experiences on offer at the Cube.

Be sure to book your flight home for after 6 pm to allow plenty of time to enjoy the day before your host drops you back at the airport for onward travel.
